In short: 11 days and 10 nights in Italy, with 5 stops: Milan → Lake Como → Lake Garda → The Dolomites (Three peaks) → Venice. Best time to go: May–June, September.
This is northern Italy in one sweep: fashion and frescoes in Milan, villas on Lake Como, lemon terraces on Lake Garda, a hike around the most famous peaks of the Alps, and a last evening on the canals of Venice. It’s two nights everywhere and no rushing, ending with a Rare card on Lake Como.
When to go
Late May, June and September are ideal. The lakes are warm, the mountain huts and the Tre Cime toll road are open, and the summer crowds are either still to come or gone again.
- July and August work, but expect full lakeside towns and Ferragosto prices around mid-August.
- April and October are lovely in the cities and on the lakes, but many Dolomites huts and lifts are closed.
- November to March suits a city trip, but not this route.
The route, stop by stop

1 · Milan — 2 nights
Climb onto the marble roof of the Duomo, walk through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and book Leonardo’s Last Supper well in advance. In the evening, have an aperitivo along the Navigli canals.

2 · Lake Como — 2 nights (Rare card)
Shaped like an upside-down Y, Lake Como is one of Europe’s deepest lakes, with steep green slopes and villa gardens down to the water. Stay in Varenna or Bellagio and use the ferries: Villa del Balbianello, Villa Carlotta and the lanes of Bellagio are all one boat ride away. This is a Rare card in Xplore.
Tip: buy a day pass for the central-lake ferries rather than single tickets.

3 · Lake Garda — 2 nights
Italy’s largest lake has two characters. The south is wide and Mediterranean, with Sirmione’s castle and thermal springs. The north is a narrow fjord between mountains, where Riva and Limone have windsurfers and lemon houses. Base yourself in the north for the drive into the mountains.

4 · The Dolomites (Three Peaks) — 2 nights
The Tre Cime di Lavaredo are three limestone towers rising straight out of alpine meadows, and among the most recognisable mountains in Europe. The loop trail around them (about 10 km, 3–4 hours, little elevation gain) starts at Rifugio Auronzo and passes three huts. Stay in Cortina d’Ampezzo or Dobbiaco.
Tip: start early, because the toll-road car park fills up by mid-morning in summer.

5 · Venice — 2 nights
End with no cars, no roads and more than 400 bridges. Get up early for an empty St Mark’s Square, ride vaporetto line 1 along the Grand Canal, and lose yourself in Cannaregio for cicchetti in the evening. Two nights let you see Venice after the day-trippers leave.
Tip: check whether the Venice day-tripper access fee applies on your dates. Overnight guests are exempt but still need to register.
Practical tips
- Transport: trains connect Milan, Como, Garda (Desenzano / Peschiera) and Venice. For the Dolomites, rent a car in Verona or Trento and return it before Venice.
- Booking: reserve Lake Como and Dolomites stays early for June and September.
- Mountains: weather changes fast above 2,000 m, so bring a warm layer even in July.
